Honeycomb Archway at Ontario Tech University!
Honeycomb Archway at Ontario Tech University!
Recently, we had a unique opportunity to partner with Ontario Tech University to mentor architectural technologist students from Durham College throughout their project on architectural placemaking.
The project, a honeycomb-patterned archway, will allow the university’s Pollinator Project, Bee City Program, and Library Seed Project to expand beyond the classroom walls, providing essential education regarding the important relationship between plants, bees, small insects, and humans. Apart from serving as an educational hub for staff and students, the area will also function as a welcoming space for anyone visiting the university. The addition of a community garden surrounding the archway will not only enhance the space's beauty but also provide visitors with knowledge about the specific herbs, pollinator-friendly flowers, and indigenous plants located within the area.
Projects like this enable students to build essential relationships with members of their community, local businesses, governments, and Indigenous Peoples to raise awareness about current sustainability issues affecting their communities. By providing green spaces across campus where these projects will be located, students are able to gain important knowledge about greener workforces and the best practices needed to build towards better, brighter, and healthier communities through architecture.
