Northumberland Medical Arts Centre
Cobourg, Ontario
Located at the northwest corner of the DePalma Drive and Burnham Street intersection, adjacent to Northumberland Hills Hospital in Cobourg, this building was designed to bring a number of healthcare groups under one roof, including a Family Health Organization, a Family Health Team, and a group of private physicians who would occupy the second and third floors of the building, and a group of administrative and allied health professionals who would occupy suites on the ground floor.
The building design began with the pedestrian as the focus, with a series of covered arcades that lead to the lobby and various allied health suites that are accessed from the exterior at grade. The combination of three-storey and one-storey elements and the patterning of wide and narrow windows interspersed with areas of curtainwall are based on the use and function of the interior spaces. The cladding choice of beige brick matches the colour of the brick banding on the hospital and tie the new building in with the rest of the property.
