Seneca - School of Aviation

Seneca College School of Aviation

Peterborough, Ontario

With the closure of Buttonville Airport in Markham, Seneca College needed to move their entire flight school and aviation technology program to a new airport. After selecting Peterborough for the relocation there was only one year remaining to construct the building to house the program. Under a design-build contract, Mortlock Construction and Lett Architects were able to provide a new facility to house the Seneca program in this tight timeframe.

The project involved the renovation of an existing hangar and substantial new construction that provided academic, administrative, flight simulation and technical spaces as well as a second hangar. The approach was to provide the new space adjacent to the runway giving Seneca a strong presence at the airport. The key feature was to create a large deck to resemble the design of a biplane wing. This gesture not only gives the school presence but also defines the entrance to the school from the public side of the airport.

This project is a very exciting one…I do want to congratulate both Seneca College and also the Peterborough Airport for this and to congratulate them on what is indeed an exciting new partnership.
